Fizzy Red U10 Reps

U10s impress at Canberra Stadium

The Goulburn Fizzy Reds' first representative fixture of the 2007 season took place last Friday night with the Goulburn under-10s playing the Young under-10s in a curtain raiser to the Brumbies v Western Force game at Bruce Stadium.

Captain James Finch proudly led the Goulburn team down the tunnel and out onto the Canberra Stadium to the roars of the crowd which was liberally sprinkled with very vocal Goulburn supporters.

From the kick off Goulburn moved up in defence and pressured the Young side with some crunching tackles from the two locks Josh Plumb and Jack L Bell.

After several attacking raids the Young side caught the Goulburn defence short and created an overlap to score out wide. Young 5 Goulburn 0. The Goulburn lads refused to take this lying down and launched a flurry of attacking plays with both Sam White and Lachlan Sykes making damaging bursts through the Young backline. This sustained attack culminated in five-eight James Finch diving over for a five-pointer. Young 5 Goulburn 5.

The selectors of the Goulburn side had the Young side guessing with the inclusion of two Jack Bell's in the side, one a prop and the other a lock. The Young side must have thought that Jack Bell was all over the field as they constantly heard that name ringing in their ears.

For the next five minutes the Young team then hammered the Goulburn line, wave after wave of attackers were mowed down by the front row combination Paddy Foley, Paul Zucchetto and Jack T Bell.

A knock on by Goulburn led to quick turnover ball and against the run of play, a break by the Young inside centre resulted in a second try. Young 10 Goulburn 5.

Goulburn half back Elijah Fernance and winger Mathew Cudaj were making some great sniping runs ensuring that the Goulburn forward pack kept rolling forward. From a Mathew Cudaj darting run James Finch accepted the ball and using fend, which would please most of the Brumbies' backs, pushed off several defenders to score in the corner. Young 10 Goulburn 10.

The injection of Daniel Karooz into the game saw some of the best tackling of the entire match. Daniel proved to be a tackling machine and continually cut down the Young attackers.

Josh Beard must have felt that Daniel's example was the way to go as he then pulled off several hits of his own to have the Young players avoiding both these punishing tacklers whenever possible.

Goulburn's luck then turned sour as they were then desperately unlucky to have a try awarded against them from a defensive lineout.  Goulburn's happy hooker Paul Zucchetto fired the ball into to the lock Jack L Bell who took a great two handed grab and then passed the ball off the top to half back Elijah Fernance. One of the Young forwards, who was very obviously lurking offside, came though the lineout and intercepted the ball to score an extremely dubious try. Young 15 Goulburn 10.

This unfortunate try seemed to inspire the Goulburn side and as the halftime siren loomed a great tackle from Lachlan Sykes and good pilfering from Jack L Bell led to Paddy Foley making a burst up the sideline.

Quick ball was then recycled through half back Elijah Fernance to James Finch who bustled his way over for a hat trick of tries. Young 15 Goulburn 15 at halftime.

After a quick halftime talk from coach, John Bell, the Goulburn boys came firing with tons of pressure being placed on the Young defence unit. Strong runs from Sam White and Daniel Karooz put Goulburn in position to score but a dropped ball allowed the Young winger to tip-toe along the sideline and dive over in the corner. Young 20 Goulburn 15.

Play then flowed from end to end with neither team being able to gain an advantage. Lachlan Sykes was hassling the Young backs into error with his "in your face" defence and both Josh Plumb and Josh Beard made ground with solid runs to put Goulburn in good field position.

Elijah Fernance was desperately unlucky not to have scored when pulled down a metre short of the try line. Another turnover allowed the Young five-eighth to bolt downfield with the entire Goulburn team in hot pursuit, fullback Sam White nailed him in a great tackle but the tryline was too close and Young had scored again. Young 25 Goulburn 15.

With time running out, the Goulburn team threw caution to the wind and tossed the ball around seeking a hole in the Young defence. The forwards drove the play upfield with Paul Zucchetto bustling the Young players out the way. Support arrived in the form of both the Jack Bell's who secured the ball and allowed Elijah Fernance to cleverly work the blindside and pick up winger Mathew Cudaj on the burst.

Mathew Cudaj, showing great finishing skills, sprinted downfield out pacing the defence to dive over for a well worked team try. Young 25 Goulburn 20. Goulburn rushed to receive the kick off but time had run out with the final score favouring Young by 25 to 20.

There were many positives to come out of the match with all players performing above the coaches expectations. After only two training runs the boys can be justifiably proud of their efforts on the day.

Jack L Bell at the front of the Goulburn lineout never missed a throw from his ever reliable hooker Paul Zucchetto all day and the variety of utilising Paddy Foley as the second lineout jumper and Josh Plumb as the third lineout jumper ensured good quality ball for the speedy Goulburn backs. The tight five of Jack T Bell, Paul Zucchetto, Paddy Foley, Jack L Bell and Josh Plumb scrummaged well all day and will learn plenty from the experience.

The attacking efforts in the backs of James Finch, Lachlan Sykes, Mathew Cudaj, Elijah Fernance and Sam White combined with the hard hitting defence of Daniel Karooz and Josh Beard were a joy to behold. All in all, although not the result that the boys would have liked, but they all played above themselves and created a great start to the season for the Fizzy Reds.

The full team list was: Jack T Bell; Paul Zucchetto; Patrick Foley; Jack L Bell; Josh Plumb; Josh Beard; Lachlan Sykes; Daniel Karooz; Elizah Fernance; James Finch; Mathew Cudaj; Sam White.

Folksy Red Column 01

After a year in the Wilderness, he's back!!!

By THE FOLKSY RED

The Goulburn Dirty Reds got off to the best start they could hope for in 2007, easily disposing of the Yass Rams in Yass. The result was good one for the first grade lads but the win for the second graders was outstanding.

The Reds have struggled for numbers at training all season until last Thursday when several players made their training debut for 2007. That hit out proved to be the key as they were to fit and far too organised for the Yass lads.

Jason 'Cosmo' Kramer had one of the best individual games I have seen. He played with ample aggression in both attack and defence. It was the kind of performance that will have most first graders on notice.

If the Reds are to win a first grade comp they will need second grade to be putting up performances like they did on Saturday. Pressure for spots is a great sign of depth, which the club has been chasing for some time.
There were a number of very talented players running on in second grade on Saturday and if that team plays more often than not they will win more often than not.

Another impressive performer on the weekend was 'Mr Yabbie of the Year' Charlie Brewer. 'Bruiser' made his debut in the front row on Saturday and the 2006 'Animal of the Year' didn't let any one down.

'Poi Poi Moi Moi' is a strongly built individual and while he isn't built like a traditional front rower he brings intelligence and cunning. He is filling a huge hole for the Reds and his hoping his form holds.

Some impressive debuts for the Reds on the weekend. 'Big Red' Jono Hart played his first game for the two Dirties on Saturday.
He looks a likely customer with some light stepping that is sure to come in handy on the dance floor at the RSL.

Speaking of debuts 'the little plumber boy' Dean Thompson made his contact sport debut on the wing in first grade, much to the disappointment of his mother Vivienne.  Viv (I hope it's ok for me to call you that) had to have thought she had protected her little boy from it, but 'LPB' defied the odds to debut at age 33.

Much to the delight of 'Big Phil' the boy goes good. 'LPB' looked dangerous in attack and solid as a rock in defence. He also received a best and fairest point for his efforts. Congratulations big dog.

Here's hoping that a certain business partner who signed a legally binding contract might locate the top left hand side of his chest some time soon and honour his word. I won't hold my breath.

Dale Backhouse had a big debut for the Dirties as well on Saturday. He was solid in second grade and then came on at fullback in first grade to score a try.  He then also made his first appearance on a bus trip for the Reds. Rumours are floating about regarding his performance on the bus but it sounds like 'Cowboy' Newby and 'Yeo Dog' Yeo took care of you well. To his parents I offer a formal apology but I have the numbers of some good lawyers if you require them.

On to the serious stuff now and the performance of the day. There were some notable performances.

It came down to two plays. The runner up is unlucky to miss out but I'm thinking it could be a new award for the club. I will go away and look for some sponsors for our new 'Harold Holt Award of excellence'.

Chris 'Shadow' Kilby is the first nomination of the year. Shadow was asked if he would like another refreshing beverage at the Soldiers Club. He responded with a 'yes, but I just have to go to the bathroom first'. The shadow wasn't to be seen again. We are appealing to the club to lock down one entry to the bathrooms. The shadow has done the old two-door trick. In one way. Out the other and gooone. Disappointing form 'Shadow'.  Sponsors.... Call me. I don't think this will be the last incident of its kind in 2007.

The winner of the first play of the day is the entertainment machine Boyd 'Fred Astaire' Newby. Consider the floor at the Soldiers club dominated. He smoked it up with many a willing dance partner.

The ladies couldn't get enough dance time with the big man as one after another queued for a chance to 'trip the light fantastic' with the light footed second rower. It was a golden performance.

Not so golden was the performance of his off-sider Anthony 'Yo-Yo' Yeo. He couldn't find a tree in a forest.  In a room full of ladies looking for a dance partner no one wanted a bar of him. He danced solo so poorly that people cheered when he eventually left the establishment. He was an embarrassment to the club, his family and himself.

I expect a formal written apology before he is allowed to play for the club again. It is time the Willie Mason clone started to look at himself.

Well that is all for this week folks. Souths are up 10-6 and I need to cheer them home. This weekend will see the Reds either host Cooma or travel to Cooma ground availability pending. Poidevin is struggling a little and the boys will have to move to Carr-Confoy if we can find some posts. Till next time. Go the Rabbits! I mean Reds.

Round 01 Report - Yass (Away)

Reds bury Rams

By PETER OLIVER

FIRST GRADE:

Goulburn Dirty Reds 50
Yass Rams 5

The Goulburn Dirty Reds sent an ominous warning to the Monaro competition on Saturday, thumping the Yass Rams 50-5. Fullback Rob Sheekey scored a hat-trick in the seven tries to one win over Goulburn's rival of 130 years, in a game where the Reds never really hit top gear.

It was a case of something old and something new for the Reds. Pete de Beer made a long awaited return to the first grade side, after missing last year with an injury, while there were a few new faces in the mix.  Last year's second grade players' player Ben Green made the step up to the first grade squad, while Dean Thompson made his run on debut.

The Reds got off to a solid start, with Sheekey testing the Rams' defence out wide with some blazing runs, and it didn't take the Reds long to open their account.

The Reds' forward pack mauled the ball up from a lineout, grinding away at the Rams' defence before spinning the ball out wide to Sheekey, who shimmied in and away to score next to the posts after 12 minutes.
Flyhalf Mick Webber slotted the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Although the Reds were hammered by the whistle, they still managed to turn over plenty of Yass ball at the breakdown, and defended grimly on their line.

The whistle blew once too often for Webber, who earned an early halftime break after venting his frustration at referee Glenn Piazza.
It was scrappy stuff from both sides, who struggled to control the ball until winger Jay Butler crossed in the corner for to take a 14-0 lead, before Sheekey crossed just before the break.

The Reds switched to a game of pick and drive, mixed up with some superb play through the backline, making easy yards up field.  When veteran Martin Browne smashed his way over for a try, the game looked in the bag, with number eight Anthony Yeo adding to the Rams' misery with a barge-over five-pointer.

The shellacking wasn't over, with Webber adding a try to his name and Sheekey notching up his third.

Debutante, Dale Backhouse came on as a replacement and scored his maiden Reds try.

The Reds backrow continued their great form of last year, and with the experience of de Beer, will again be a factor this season. New prop Charlie Brewer had a massive game up front, with his high work-rate around the paddock a testament to his background on the flank.
The discipline from the Reds was at time dire; luckily they played well enough for it not to become a factor.

One disappointment for the Reds will be the late, and very soft try, scored by the Rams' Brett Waters from a Yass kick off.

The 3-2-1 went to the outstanding flanker Chris Kilby, who was all over the park for the full 80 minutes, Brewer and Thompson. Hooker Anthony Allport again played his typical bustling game, earning the players' player accolade.

SECOND GRADE:

Goulburn Dirty Reds 32
Yass Rams 0

In second grade the Reds also recorded a victory, knocking over the Hoggets 32-0. Flanker Jason Kremer had a memorable Saturday, scoring two barnstorming tries from halfway and picking up the players' player award.

Outside centre Pat Little also picked up two tries, including a sensational near length of the field intercept after the Reds had been camped on their line.

The 3-2-1 went to Kremer, Moore and winger Jono Hart.

Round 01 Preview - Yass (Away)

Expectations high as Reds chase the title

By RICKY TOZER

(Goulburn Post Friday 20th April, 2007)

The Goulburn Dirty Reds will be out to erase some of the pain caused from their grand final loss when they take on Yass in the opening round tomorrow. The Reds took out the minor premiership in 2006, but couldn't handle the power of Harden in the grand final.

The Reds have basically the same side as last year and new coach Matthew O'Rourke is hoping they can go one better in 2007.

"All of the guys are looking forward to starting and I think there is an expectation of going one step further than last year," O'Rourke said.
"The team is very similar to last year, we have seen a few new faces around, but don't really know much about them as yet. The team has a lot of guys who have played grade union over the last few years and know what to do.

"The likes of Matt Klem, Dave Anable and Jeff Caldwell give us plenty of experience and then the younger players like Anthony Allport, Mick Webber and Rob Sheekey are all used to the competition."

The Reds will be without former captain/coach Ben Pearson for some of the season for personal reasons, however he will still play an important role with the club.

"Unfortunately Ben will be missing for a bit of the year. I am not sure what role he will play in the season, but he will be involved. But to lose a player like him is a big blow," O'Rourke said.

"Anthony Allport will take over the captain's role. He is a younger player and has been around for three or four years and also had a year overseas," he said. "He is a very competitive player and has some very good skills."

The Reds take on Yass in the opening round and despite Yass' ordinary performance in 2007 O'Rourke is expecting a rugged battle.
Yass took out the competition in 2005, but lost a lot of players for last year, with them fading badly.

"I have played against Yass myself and you never have an easy match against them," O'Rourke said. "If they do get back some of the players they lost they will be a formidable outfit.

"They are never an easy team and are always very competitive, so I am not expecting an easy start to the year."

After pre-season hit outs in the Crookwell 10s and against Taralga and Bowral O'Rourke is hoping his troops can switch on for the opening round and reproduce some of the efforts that saw them grab the minor premiership.

"Coming out of a year where we were runners up I will be looking for the guys start well. They know what they have to do and what the end result can be," he said. "We are coming off a few pre-season games, so the guys will have to be ready for the season."

The Reds and Yass do battle tomorrow at Yass tomorrow, with first grade kicking off at 3pm.
