Two hidings at Poidevin Oval

Goulburn Dirty Reds   57

Tuggeranong Vikings  0

THERE were two good old fashion hidings dished out at Poidevin Oval on Saturday afternoon.

In first grade the Goulburn Dirty Reds hammered last year’s grand finalists Tuggeranong 57-0, with Mikael Webber and new fly-half Jay Butler notching up hat-tricks.

The Reds showed plenty of confidence to throw the ball wide on a day perfect for attacking rugby, and backed this up with some tremendous support play.

They showed intensity at the breakdown, providing the backline with plenty of clean ball.

The Reds posted points early and never relented, with plenty of straight, strong running. Ben Green lead the way from each kick off he received, pinning his ears back and throwing himself into the Vikings’ defence.

The Reds never allowed the pressure to lift off the Vikings, who never seemed to have the numbers needed in defence.

Fullback Dean Thompson made a solid bust down one side and threw the ball out to Martin Browne, who flicked it back into Thompson before he was brought down just short of the line. From the scrum the Reds number 8 Chris Kilby went the blind side and pushed himself over.

The Reds kept their expansive game going with Butler launching a wide ball from a lineout to Robbie Cosgrove on the wing. Cosgrove powered over the line, but couldn’t get the ball down and managed to palm the ball off to Butler who fell over the line to extend the lead to 24-0.

The biggest cheer of the day was saved for the next try. The Reds threw the ball through the hands out to hooker Anthony Allport outwide, who put the foot down and sprinted to the line. The cover defence came across and Allport offloaded to big Dave Anable who rumbled over the line untouched.

Goulburn Dirty Reds 57 (Webber 3, Butler 3, Kilby, Allport, Anable tries, Webber 5, Allport con) defeated Tuggeranong 0.

Sadly for second grade, it was a different story in their grand final rematch against Royals.

Second grade took the field one man short and were never in the game, conceding 11 tries in a 69-5 hammering.

Andrew Tivey was a standout on the wing with some strong runs while scrum-half Joel McPherson showed some fine vision to spin the ball out wide under pressure.

The Reds’ only try came after they managed to string some phase play together and pressure the Royals line. Lock Dougie Webster managed to burrow himself over the line from close range to get the Reds on the board.

Royals 69 def Goulburn 5 (Doug Webster try).

Goulburn U18s stand out

Over 50 ACT schoolboys played in the annual selection trials at Jamison Oval yesterday, under a new format. Traditionally the selection trials Involved a match between Associated Southern Colleges and Combined Secondary Colleges but this year the ASC team was split in two.

The new format provided selection headaches for ACT coach Paul Mead who had to sift through the abundance of talent to finalise his squad said the new selection process gave more players a chance to shine and state their claims for  a place on the ACT representative team.

The nationals will be held in Canberra in the first week of the upcoming school Holidays, from July8-11 at Viking Park Tuggeranong.

Goulburn’ was strongly represented in both the Associated Southern colleges’ side (ASC) and Combined Southern colleges (CSC). In the CSC side, Goulburn supplied 6 players for the side that had students from as far away as Albury, Pambula and Vincentia. The 6 players were John Cottrell, Sam White, Craig Gordon, Jacob Karra, Corey Withers and Giles Cunningham.

For the ASC side Trinity had 5 players invited to play in the side Josh Charley, Michael Campton Smith, Josh Hewitt, Reece Cranston and Jack Brimms who was attempting to make the side for the 2nd time in 2 years.

All players tried their hardest and gave a great account of themselves with Michael Campton Smith setting himself up as the possible bolter to make the side.

Unfortunately Michael was not fortunate enough to make the squad but Giles Cunningham and Jack Brimms Both made the ACT open School Boys side as well as the ACT under 18 squad, who will play games against Victoria, South Australia and NSW Country under 18s in Melbourne over the long weekend in June.

Goulburn's best U16s shine in trial

On Sunday the 18th 17 young under 16 players from Goulburn traveled to Braidwood to trial for the Far South Coast, Monaro under 16 representative trials.

The trials drew players from as far a field as Pambula, Cooma and Vincentia.

The squad will travel to Melbourne and play 2 Victorian side a side from south Australia, The ACT under 16s team and a team from the Southern Inland over the long weekend in June.

This will be the first time that a team from the Far South Coast and the Monaro have gone away to play in this tournament and it is real comment on how strong Rugby is growing in this largely Rugby league and Australian Rules dominated area.

Goulburn had some real success on the day, geting 11 players out of the 22 man squad selected they are Corey Whithers, Tom White, Mark Kennedy and Hugo Cunningham from the Tablelands team, while Trinity had Toby Wilson, Dom McCarthy, Matt Bird, Tom Richie, Mitch McGeechan, Brendan McKavanagh and Dom Chalker.

Tim O'Brien the coach was really pleased with the commitment all the boys showed on the day and feels that this side really has some depth and that we will suprise a lot of sides down at the Melbourne tournament.

ROUND 03: Gbn v Cooma (Away)

17/5/2008

Reds remain unbeaten at a massive cost

By PETER OLIVER

Goulburn Dirty Reds   17

Cooma Red Devils      15

IT was tough, torrid and tense, but the Goulburn Dirty Reds managed to keep their unbeaten streak alive against the Cooma Red Devils.

But the loss came at a cost, with fly-half Matt Klem breaking his ankle in the first half, requiring surgery to insert pins and a plate.

The win wasn’t sealed for the visitors until the final minutes, when the Reds’ scrum barged their way over the line and a scrambling Chris Kilby dived on the ball to overtake Cooma and secure the victory.

Cooma got on the board first with a penalty, but the Reds hit back through Mikael Webber to get a 5-3 lead.

Martin Browne came on to replace the injured Klem, with Webber moving infield.

It was torrid stuff out there, with both sides having a crack, with the Reds throwing the ball out-wide and the play would break down. One of these mistakes led to a Cooma try, with the Red Devils scooping on the loose ball and countering, throwing it wide and going through some flimsy defence to score.

Captain Anthony Allport urged his team to dig deep, but it wasn’t enough as Cooma crossed again.

The real battle was at the breakdown, with Cooma constantly killing the ball and slowing down the Reds’ play. The referee eventually had enough of this, yellow carding the Cooma blindside flanker on the Reds line.

From the tap young tighthead prop Dave Hook powered over the line next to the post for his first Dirty Reds try. Hook had to leave the field with a leg injury afterwards and was replaced by the experienced Ben Pearson.

Goulburn players were baffled by decisions made by the referee, including ruling Webber held up over the line after he had grounded the ball. But from there the Reds scored the final, match-winning try. Goulburn ran down the clock until the final whistle, earning a character-building victory.

Dirty Twos 14

Cooma 14

Second grade was equally as tense, coming away with a 14-all draw against Cooma.

Hard-running second rower Justin Benn scored a bustling double to keep the Reds in the game, with young half-back Joel McPherson kicking both goals. McPherson slotted one conversion from wide out into the teeth of a powerful gale.

Ben Pearson earned a 10 minute rest for brusquely brushing away a Cooma player’s arm during a maul, with the Red Devils’ player also shown the yellow card after taking exception.

Cooma eventually over-ran the Reds after injecting several first grade players into the game, with one scoring what turned out to be the levelling try.

McPherson had a chance to kick a penalty to win the game for the Reds, but the howling gale carried his tough attempt wide as the final whistle blew.

Mixed Results for Tablelands Teams

Round 03 - May 17th 2008

Tablelands Top Guns topple Soldiers

Coming off a loss against Royals in Round 2, the Southern Garages U18’s bounced back with a 24 to 10 win against ADFA in Round 3 of the ACT junior Rugby Competition.

The previous loss had been largely due to the lack of any real pre-season competition, so the team was really still finding its feet and just starting to Gel as a unit.

The day was blustery and cold and we started the game with a strong breeze in our face, therefore the first half was played fairly tightly, with a lot of good gutsy forward work, thanks to players like Giles Cunningham, James Cabale and Reece O’Neill. This was good, as the longer the lads could hold the opposition out, the stronger they became as a unit.

Half time came and ADFA held an ominous 10 – 0 lead. But it was to be a different game in the second half, as we utilised the strong breeze to our advantage through the boot of Jacob Kara and Aaron Williams.

There is nothing like territorial advantage to inspire players to lift to another level and instil confidence into the side. This was immediately evident as the backs started to through the ball around cutting holes in ADFA’s defensive line.

We had many opportunities to score in the second half with consistent pressure being applied by our halves and loose forwards causing the opposition to spill a lot of ball within there quarter. Goulburns backline played their best football for some time, sticking to the game plan and attacking, through set moves, always testing ADFA’s defences.

We managed to cross the line four times in the second half, twice through the forwards and twice through the back line. Justifications for the amount of work both forwards and backs put in on the day.

Goulburn 24 (Giles Cunningham 2 tries; Andrew Price try; Jacob Kara try. Aaron Williams 2 conversions) def ADFA 10.

The players player award went to Giles Cunningham while Sam McNeilly picked up the Coaches Award.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the loss for the season of Ben Rabjohns. Ben was injured in a training run with the ACT U/18 side. Ben will be greatly missed this season, as he was an integral part of the team as well as team captain. Get well soon Ben.

Under 16’s fall back to earth at Cooma

On Saturday the Tablelands Under 16’s Rugby Union team travelled to Cooma for their third game of the season.

Still on a high from their previous win against St Edmunds, the boys were very optimistic about this game.  However during the first half their hopes were dashed with injuries to two key players, Adam Brook and Hugo Cunningham.  This left the team fielding only 14 players for the remainder the game.

During the second half there were glimpses of brilliance with the perseverance of Tom White and Bradley Redman almost resulting in a try each.

The continued defence and determination of Henry Reeves and Sean Lawler didn’t go unnoticed, nor did the exceptional efforts of Walter Foreman, which saw him rewarded with the player’s player for the game.

Congratulations must be given to all the team on a game well played in atrocious conditions even though the end result wasn’t in their favour.

The team now looks forward to making amends for the loss to Cooma with the return of Mark Kennedy and Adam Stevens from injury for the next game.

Fizzy Reds Round 1

Fizzy's kick off for 2008

GOULBURN Junior Rugby is underway with teams playing the second round on Friday night. All teams are coming together well and with a few more weeks of training behind them we will see a vast improvement in the skills shown at Carr Confoy fields.

All coaches are reminded that they have been given forms to complete for match reports weekly. The completed reports can be left at the canteen on Friday nights. Please ensure that your writing is readable. The results from Round 1 (Friday May 9) were as follows:

UNDER 8s

Taralga 25 def Force5

TARALGA opened strongly with some wide running to open spaces. which resulted in two early tries. For the Force, Bydie Clark ran strongly as did Elkie O'Rourke. Taralga led three tries to nil at halftime. In the second half the Force settled better and tapped better in defence but Taralga were far too strong. Riley Weekes scored late for the Force.

Reds 40 def Brumbies 25

BALMY conditions at Carr Confoy greeted both teams. This seemed to encourage a free running game played in good spirits. This was the first game with scrums and everyone adapted well. Best players for Reds were Lucas Ross and Angus Groer and Brumbies Sam Watson and Jack Mifsud.  Try scorers: REDS: Liam Greenwood 2, Oscar Cole 2, Chloe Young 2, Ryan Dodson 1, Conner Ferguson I.  BRUMBIES: Jack Mifsud 2, May Flack 2, Mike Cooke 1.

UNDER 10s

Brumbies 50 def Reds 10

POWERFUL attack from Will Croker and Steve Anable caused the Reds some early headaches. This attack combined with busting defence from Jack Bell and Jim Ranken had the Reds on the back foot all night. Cover defence by Lachlan Phelps and Jack Elders was a highlight for the Brumbies while John Vassallo and Jackson Huntley's skills are developing well.

Sam Coggan was tine of the Reds’ best, working well in both attack and ddefence, while Charlie Newton used his strength to bust the Brumbies' line on a number of occasions. Best players for Brumbies were Jack Bell, William Croker, Steve Anable and Jackson Huntley and for Reds Sam Coggan, Charlie Newton, Jack Dival and Harry Dival.

Try scorers: BRUMBIES: Steve Anable 3, William Croker 3, Jackson Huntley 2, Jim Ranken 1, John Vassallo 1. REDS: Charlie Newton 1, Sam Cogan 1.

UNDER 12

Waratahs 53 def Taralga 0

WITH a great nigh for football both teams came out for a hard game. Taralga started off with some great forward movement but once the Waratahs found their feet they shut them down. There were some big hits from both teams that would rival George Smith. Taralga were unlucky on the night and with the attitude of their younger boys they will certainly be a force at the end. Thanks to the ref and parents. Best players for Waratahs were Beau Johnson, Sam Anderson and Bailey Probert and for Taralga George Boardman, Lachlan Whatmough and Mick Garwin. Try scorers. WARATAHS: Angus Hedges, Zach Duncan, Wade Rowcliff, Kayne Davis, Matthew Sherer, Josh Chilko and Kristen Williams.

Wallabies 32 def Brumbies 5

THE game started at a frantic space with the Wallabies forwards attacking through strong runs from Nelson, Quinlan and Friend. The Brumbies counter-attacked through their slick backs of Charlie King and Jake White.

Mick White scored first for the Wallabies which was followed by a

Determined scoring run from Riley Nelson. The second half was again dominated by strong forward play from both teams. The Wallabies scored four more times in the second half with a good late try to Charlie King for the Brumbies.  All boys showed some good skills, which will develop with more matches.

Best for Wallabies were Oliver Friend, Douglas Unasa, Jeremy Quinlan and Nicholas Marsh, while for the Brumbies the Foley brothers (Patrick and Thomas) and Nathan Young stood out.

Scorers: WALLABIES: Riley Nelson 3, Mick White 1, Jeremy Quinlan 1, Nicholas Marsh 1 try; Riley Nelson 1 conv. BRUMBIES: Charlie King.

Reds stand and deliver against Bushrangers

Goulburn Dirty Reds  26

Hall Bushrangers       5

THE Goulburn Dirty Reds’ victory song rang out twice across Poidevin Oval on Saturday, with both grades making a successful start to their title defences.

The Reds ran in four tries in their 26-5 win over the Hall Bushrangers, earning their first bonus point of the season. The win was also built on the tenacious, scrambling defence that became the Reds’ trademark last season.

It took a while for the Reds to blow the rust away with the ball often going through the hands before some poor finishing saw some wasted opportunities.

The constant pressure on Hall’s defence saw them stretched once too often in the corner, with winger Jay Butler opening his account for 2008. Mikael Webber added the extras for a 7-0 lead.

The momentum swung back in Hall’s favour, applying plenty of pressure, but the Reds’ defence on their own line was stoic, constantly turning over Hall ball at crucial moments.

The match became a real arm wrestle, with Webber crossing the Hall line, only to be held up. Number 8 Ben Pearson scooped the ball up from the scrum, ran the blindside and offloaded to scrumhalf Jeff Caldwell, who strolled over untouched.

Webber made a big break down the left flank before the scrambling Hall defence managed to catch up. However they couldn’t stop fullback Dean Thompson crashing over in the corner a few rucks later.

The pressure obviously became too much for the Bushrangers, with their number 19 earning an early shower after racing in to punch one of the harder Reds’ heads on the field during a maul.

Nathan Hewett showed why he was selected in first grade after busting himself during the preseason, with a streamlined Hewett making several incising runs through the Hall backline. A break down the middle of the paddock saw Hewett put through a gap and he raced away to score under the sticks for the Reds final try.

Hall crossed for a late consolation try right on full time to take the score to 26-5.

Young flanker Ben Moore made a successful step up to first grade, earning his first best and fairest award. The Reds will be better for the hit-out, which blew the preseason cobwebs out and should see them primed for a second win next week.

***      ***      ***

Dirty Twos 19

Wests 12

The Reds’ second grade side also opened their account against Wests, notching up a confidence-boosting come from behind 19-12 win.

The Dirty Twos trailed 12-0 at the half time break, with the afternoon heat taking the sting out of both sides. The half-time chat from coaches Matt O’Rourke and Jeremy Hunt reminded the players of the game plan, and the Reds came out firing in the second half.

Fielding a large, powerful, but less then mobile pack, the Reds utterly dominated the Wests scrum, constantly pushing them backwards. The front row of Matt White, Jordan Chandler and Aaron Wild were superb at the set piece, and could form a very formidable combination as the season goes on.

Chandler was outstanding in a man of the match effort, constantly hitting the ball up and bending the Hall line backwards.

Wests elected to take uncontested scrums, allowing the Reds to take the quick tap instead of being awarded a scrum, but some poor handling and decision making means the Reds were unable to build up some phase play.

Tries to the evergreen Jeff Caldwell, Jay Butler and the rampaging Chandler in the second half put the Reds in front, where they held on for a scrappy win. Both sides will board the bus and head down to the high country to take on the Cooma Red Devils next Saturday.
