Southern Garages U18s bounce back
against Queanbeyan Whites
The Southern Garages U18s bounced back into the winners circle with a hearty 42 to 14 win over the Queanbeyan Whites. Coming off a loss the previous week, the U18s were anxious for a win to stay in touch with the top of the table in the ACT Junior Rugby competition. Also, the Queanbeyan side contained a few Goulburn players in their squad, so the local lads were keen to do well, even if only just to prove a tribal point.
It was good to have a few of the side's ‘play makers’ back like, Jacob Kara and James Smith. Jacob, in the first few minutes, set the stage for the rest of the match, by extracting a large hole from the oppositions defence. This was achieved through a set move and allowed Simon McDonald to score next to the posts.
The forwards played their best game to date, with some very solid defence and excellent work at the breakdown turning over a lot of Queanbeyan’s ball. They were well serviced from the scrum base and rucks allowing the backs to have quality ball. This showed out in the final result with all tries coming from the back line.
The only poor point to come out of the game, from Goulburn's point of view, was the lopsided penalty count. Goulburn was at the wrong end of the penalty count due to their own fault through silly infringements at the breakdown, something they we can’t afford to do against a stronger opposition.
On a brighter note Aaron Williams had a great day with the boot by kicking five conversions from six attempts. The Player's Player was Jacob Kara while the Coach's award went to Reece O'Neil.
Goulburn 42 (James Smith 3 tries, Simon McDonald, Jacob Kara, Wade Elford tries; Aaron Williams 5 conversions) bt Queanbeyan 14.
