Fizzy Reds Round 1

Fizzy's kick off for 2008

GOULBURN Junior Rugby is underway with teams playing the second round on Friday night. All teams are coming together well and with a few more weeks of training behind them we will see a vast improvement in the skills shown at Carr Confoy fields.

All coaches are reminded that they have been given forms to complete for match reports weekly. The completed reports can be left at the canteen on Friday nights. Please ensure that your writing is readable. The results from Round 1 (Friday May 9) were as follows:

UNDER 8s

Taralga 25 def Force5

TARALGA opened strongly with some wide running to open spaces. which resulted in two early tries. For the Force, Bydie Clark ran strongly as did Elkie O'Rourke. Taralga led three tries to nil at halftime. In the second half the Force settled better and tapped better in defence but Taralga were far too strong. Riley Weekes scored late for the Force.

Reds 40 def Brumbies 25

BALMY conditions at Carr Confoy greeted both teams. This seemed to encourage a free running game played in good spirits. This was the first game with scrums and everyone adapted well. Best players for Reds were Lucas Ross and Angus Groer and Brumbies Sam Watson and Jack Mifsud.  Try scorers: REDS: Liam Greenwood 2, Oscar Cole 2, Chloe Young 2, Ryan Dodson 1, Conner Ferguson I.  BRUMBIES: Jack Mifsud 2, May Flack 2, Mike Cooke 1.

UNDER 10s

Brumbies 50 def Reds 10

POWERFUL attack from Will Croker and Steve Anable caused the Reds some early headaches. This attack combined with busting defence from Jack Bell and Jim Ranken had the Reds on the back foot all night. Cover defence by Lachlan Phelps and Jack Elders was a highlight for the Brumbies while John Vassallo and Jackson Huntley's skills are developing well.

Sam Coggan was tine of the Reds’ best, working well in both attack and ddefence, while Charlie Newton used his strength to bust the Brumbies' line on a number of occasions. Best players for Brumbies were Jack Bell, William Croker, Steve Anable and Jackson Huntley and for Reds Sam Coggan, Charlie Newton, Jack Dival and Harry Dival.

Try scorers: BRUMBIES: Steve Anable 3, William Croker 3, Jackson Huntley 2, Jim Ranken 1, John Vassallo 1. REDS: Charlie Newton 1, Sam Cogan 1.

UNDER 12

Waratahs 53 def Taralga 0

WITH a great nigh for football both teams came out for a hard game. Taralga started off with some great forward movement but once the Waratahs found their feet they shut them down. There were some big hits from both teams that would rival George Smith. Taralga were unlucky on the night and with the attitude of their younger boys they will certainly be a force at the end. Thanks to the ref and parents. Best players for Waratahs were Beau Johnson, Sam Anderson and Bailey Probert and for Taralga George Boardman, Lachlan Whatmough and Mick Garwin. Try scorers. WARATAHS: Angus Hedges, Zach Duncan, Wade Rowcliff, Kayne Davis, Matthew Sherer, Josh Chilko and Kristen Williams.

Wallabies 32 def Brumbies 5

THE game started at a frantic space with the Wallabies forwards attacking through strong runs from Nelson, Quinlan and Friend. The Brumbies counter-attacked through their slick backs of Charlie King and Jake White.

Mick White scored first for the Wallabies which was followed by a

Determined scoring run from Riley Nelson. The second half was again dominated by strong forward play from both teams. The Wallabies scored four more times in the second half with a good late try to Charlie King for the Brumbies.  All boys showed some good skills, which will develop with more matches.

Best for Wallabies were Oliver Friend, Douglas Unasa, Jeremy Quinlan and Nicholas Marsh, while for the Brumbies the Foley brothers (Patrick and Thomas) and Nathan Young stood out.

Scorers: WALLABIES: Riley Nelson 3, Mick White 1, Jeremy Quinlan 1, Nicholas Marsh 1 try; Riley Nelson 1 conv. BRUMBIES: Charlie King.

Fizzy Red U10 Reps

U10s impress at Canberra Stadium

The Goulburn Fizzy Reds' first representative fixture of the 2007 season took place last Friday night with the Goulburn under-10s playing the Young under-10s in a curtain raiser to the Brumbies v Western Force game at Bruce Stadium.

Captain James Finch proudly led the Goulburn team down the tunnel and out onto the Canberra Stadium to the roars of the crowd which was liberally sprinkled with very vocal Goulburn supporters.

From the kick off Goulburn moved up in defence and pressured the Young side with some crunching tackles from the two locks Josh Plumb and Jack L Bell.

After several attacking raids the Young side caught the Goulburn defence short and created an overlap to score out wide. Young 5 Goulburn 0. The Goulburn lads refused to take this lying down and launched a flurry of attacking plays with both Sam White and Lachlan Sykes making damaging bursts through the Young backline. This sustained attack culminated in five-eight James Finch diving over for a five-pointer. Young 5 Goulburn 5.

The selectors of the Goulburn side had the Young side guessing with the inclusion of two Jack Bell's in the side, one a prop and the other a lock. The Young side must have thought that Jack Bell was all over the field as they constantly heard that name ringing in their ears.

For the next five minutes the Young team then hammered the Goulburn line, wave after wave of attackers were mowed down by the front row combination Paddy Foley, Paul Zucchetto and Jack T Bell.

A knock on by Goulburn led to quick turnover ball and against the run of play, a break by the Young inside centre resulted in a second try. Young 10 Goulburn 5.

Goulburn half back Elijah Fernance and winger Mathew Cudaj were making some great sniping runs ensuring that the Goulburn forward pack kept rolling forward. From a Mathew Cudaj darting run James Finch accepted the ball and using fend, which would please most of the Brumbies' backs, pushed off several defenders to score in the corner. Young 10 Goulburn 10.

The injection of Daniel Karooz into the game saw some of the best tackling of the entire match. Daniel proved to be a tackling machine and continually cut down the Young attackers.

Josh Beard must have felt that Daniel's example was the way to go as he then pulled off several hits of his own to have the Young players avoiding both these punishing tacklers whenever possible.

Goulburn's luck then turned sour as they were then desperately unlucky to have a try awarded against them from a defensive lineout.  Goulburn's happy hooker Paul Zucchetto fired the ball into to the lock Jack L Bell who took a great two handed grab and then passed the ball off the top to half back Elijah Fernance. One of the Young forwards, who was very obviously lurking offside, came though the lineout and intercepted the ball to score an extremely dubious try. Young 15 Goulburn 10.

This unfortunate try seemed to inspire the Goulburn side and as the halftime siren loomed a great tackle from Lachlan Sykes and good pilfering from Jack L Bell led to Paddy Foley making a burst up the sideline.

Quick ball was then recycled through half back Elijah Fernance to James Finch who bustled his way over for a hat trick of tries. Young 15 Goulburn 15 at halftime.

After a quick halftime talk from coach, John Bell, the Goulburn boys came firing with tons of pressure being placed on the Young defence unit. Strong runs from Sam White and Daniel Karooz put Goulburn in position to score but a dropped ball allowed the Young winger to tip-toe along the sideline and dive over in the corner. Young 20 Goulburn 15.

Play then flowed from end to end with neither team being able to gain an advantage. Lachlan Sykes was hassling the Young backs into error with his "in your face" defence and both Josh Plumb and Josh Beard made ground with solid runs to put Goulburn in good field position.

Elijah Fernance was desperately unlucky not to have scored when pulled down a metre short of the try line. Another turnover allowed the Young five-eighth to bolt downfield with the entire Goulburn team in hot pursuit, fullback Sam White nailed him in a great tackle but the tryline was too close and Young had scored again. Young 25 Goulburn 15.

With time running out, the Goulburn team threw caution to the wind and tossed the ball around seeking a hole in the Young defence. The forwards drove the play upfield with Paul Zucchetto bustling the Young players out the way. Support arrived in the form of both the Jack Bell's who secured the ball and allowed Elijah Fernance to cleverly work the blindside and pick up winger Mathew Cudaj on the burst.

Mathew Cudaj, showing great finishing skills, sprinted downfield out pacing the defence to dive over for a well worked team try. Young 25 Goulburn 20. Goulburn rushed to receive the kick off but time had run out with the final score favouring Young by 25 to 20.

There were many positives to come out of the match with all players performing above the coaches expectations. After only two training runs the boys can be justifiably proud of their efforts on the day.

Jack L Bell at the front of the Goulburn lineout never missed a throw from his ever reliable hooker Paul Zucchetto all day and the variety of utilising Paddy Foley as the second lineout jumper and Josh Plumb as the third lineout jumper ensured good quality ball for the speedy Goulburn backs. The tight five of Jack T Bell, Paul Zucchetto, Paddy Foley, Jack L Bell and Josh Plumb scrummaged well all day and will learn plenty from the experience.

The attacking efforts in the backs of James Finch, Lachlan Sykes, Mathew Cudaj, Elijah Fernance and Sam White combined with the hard hitting defence of Daniel Karooz and Josh Beard were a joy to behold. All in all, although not the result that the boys would have liked, but they all played above themselves and created a great start to the season for the Fizzy Reds.

The full team list was: Jack T Bell; Paul Zucchetto; Patrick Foley; Jack L Bell; Josh Plumb; Josh Beard; Lachlan Sykes; Daniel Karooz; Elizah Fernance; James Finch; Mathew Cudaj; Sam White.

Fizzy Reds February Newsletter

Welcome to 2007.

The committees of both the Fizzy Reds and Tablelands Reds would like to assure everybody that we will be endeavoring to give those younger residents of Goulburn who would like to participate in the game made in heaven (rugby union) every opportunity to do so.

Again this year we will be running to full compliment of Fizzy Reds starting with the under 6s and 8s which is designed around two-handed touch with no tackling allowed. Those children turning 9 this year will be able to play in the under 10s. This is where we start the contact with tackling becoming a major part of the game. Those children turning 11 will move up to the under 12s and will playing under full junior rules.

Again this year the Fizzy Reds will be including insurance socks, shorts and a free pass to all the Brumbies home game in the registration fee of $50 GST included.

We will be running a 14 week season and anticipate the starting date to be the 30th March commencing at 5.30pm at a venue as yet to be confirmed. The first training night will be held on the 16th of March again commencing at 5.30 at a venue as yet to be confirmed.

We are going to run a junior rugby program again this year, which will include under 13, 14, 15, 16, and opens if we get the numbers. These teams will compete in the Canberra competition which is played on a Saturday in both Goulburn and Canberra. These teams were both quiet successful last year and if we can get the same support and participation as last year then we will have another good year.

The first registration day will be held at Sportspower on Saturday, February 3rd beginning at 11 o'clock and going through to 1.30pm. The reason we are holding the registration day so early is so that all those children that register will get the free pass for the Brumbies game and as the first home game for the Brumbies is on the 10th we do not have any other option other than to hold it on the 3rd.

Important dates to remember:
03/02/2007: Registration day at Sportspower, stating at 11am and finishing at 1.30pm.
16/03/2007: First training night for Fizzy Reds.
30/03/2007: First competition game for Fizzy Reds beginning at 5.30pm at a venue yet to be confirmed.

Again, I would urge all parents that want to be involved to put their hands up and get involved as we cannot run this competition without the valued input of parents and friends.

Fizzy Reds season to be extended

The length of the Fizzy Reds' Junior Rugby season will be extended by a further 4 weeks in 2007, it was decided at the Fizzy Reds' monthly meeting on Friday 10th November.  The season will now commence three weeks before the Easter holidays and will include two weeks of training and one actual game before the school holidays. The remainder of the four weeks will be added to the end of the season, allowing the Fizzy's to take advantage of any late gala days that may be attended.

It was also decided to try and align the Fizzy's Calendar with the senior club with a calendar sent to all parents identifying all Dirty Reds home games to encourage more families to go and watch the club home games. Registration day for the 2007 season will be held at Sportspower on a Saturday morning yet to be decided.  Separate stations will be set up for each age group and the committee wished to thank Rohan who has offered us free advertising for the day.

In other club news,  the committee decided that a minimum of three gala days should be attended this year.  These should ideally be held at the beginning, middle and end of the season. 2007 is Goulburn's turn to host Wagga Wagga and Southern Inland sides and it is envisaged that this would coinicide with the middle season gala day, pending the availability of grounds.  ACT Junior Rugby will be contacted to see if the Fizzy's need to pay a nominal affiliation fee to allow us to send players to their Under 12 trials next year.

Reviewing last year's presentation day, including comments received from parents and related parties, it was decided not to alter the format dramatically but that more activities may be offered in 2007. The committee also advised that, for the 2007 season, it was hoped the publicity officer would provide information including match reports to not only the Goulburn Post but also to 2GN and this website to boost the code's exposure.

The planned stock take will still be taking place at Poidevin Oval on Saturday 18th November beginning at 10am for a stock take of all rugby equipment.  If anyone has any Fizzy Reds equipment that should have been returned, please ensure it is returned to the Oval on or before the stocktake day so it can be included. While speaking on Poidevin Oval, Fred Hucker is to be approached to explore the possibilities of having the ground line marked by Correctional Centre inmates.

The meeting finished at 8.45pm and the next meeting is scheduled for Friday 1st December at 6.30pm (with agenda items to be sent to Jack Cunningham - 0408 418525.

From other points raised, John Bell will investigate possible dates for gala days and will discuss with Ross Copland which games will be representative games and which will be open to Fizzy Red players.

Matt Klem, as Canteen Co-ordinator, indicated that at least one month's notice would be needed in advance of Gala Days.  He will also be conducting an official stocktake of all Fizzy Red resources, including jumpers, cones and tackle equipment on Saturday 18th November at 10.30am at Poidevin Oval.
