Southern Garages U18s bounce back
against Queanbeyan Whites
The Southern Garages U18s bounced back into the winners circle with a hearty 42 to 14 win over the Queanbeyan Whites. Coming off a loss the previous week, the U18s were anxious for a win to stay in touch with the top of the table in the ACT Junior Rugby competition. Also, the Queanbeyan side contained a few Goulburn players in their squad, so the local lads were keen to do well, even if only just to prove a tribal point.
It was good to have a few of the side's ‘play makers’ back like, Jacob Kara and James Smith. Jacob, in the first few minutes, set the stage for the rest of the match, by extracting a large hole from the oppositions defence. This was achieved through a set move and allowed Simon McDonald to score next to the posts.
The forwards played their best game to date, with some very solid defence and excellent work at the breakdown turning over a lot of Queanbeyan’s ball. They were well serviced from the scrum base and rucks allowing the backs to have quality ball. This showed out in the final result with all tries coming from the back line.
The only poor point to come out of the game, from Goulburn's point of view, was the lopsided penalty count. Goulburn was at the wrong end of the penalty count due to their own fault through silly infringements at the breakdown, something they we can’t afford to do against a stronger opposition.
On a brighter note Aaron Williams had a great day with the boot by kicking five conversions from six attempts. The Player's Player was Jacob Kara while the Coach's award went to Reece O'Neil.
Goulburn 42 (James Smith 3 tries, Simon McDonald, Jacob Kara, Wade Elford tries; Aaron Williams 5 conversions) bt Queanbeyan 14.

Two hidings at Poidevin Oval
Goulburn Dirty Reds 57 Tuggeranong Vikings 0
THERE were two good old fashion hidings dished out at Poidevin Oval on Saturday afternoon.
In first grade the Goulburn Dirty Reds hammered last year’s grand finalists Tuggeranong 57-0, with Mikael Webber and new fly-half Jay Butler notching up hat-tricks.
The Reds showed plenty of confidence to throw the ball wide on a day perfect for attacking rugby, and backed this up with some tremendous support play.
They showed intensity at the breakdown, providing the backline with plenty of clean ball.
The Reds posted points early and never relented, with plenty of straight, strong running. Ben Green lead the way from each kick off he received, pinning his ears back and throwing himself into the Vikings’ defence.
The Reds never allowed the pressure to lift off the Vikings, who never seemed to have the numbers needed in defence.
Fullback Dean Thompson made a solid bust down one side and threw the ball out to Martin Browne, who flicked it back into Thompson before he was brought down just short of the line. From the scrum the Reds number 8 Chris Kilby went the blind side and pushed himself over.
The Reds kept their expansive game going with Butler launching a wide ball from a lineout to Robbie Cosgrove on the wing. Cosgrove powered over the line, but couldn’t get the ball down and managed to palm the ball off to Butler who fell over the line to extend the lead to 24-0.
The biggest cheer of the day was saved for the next try. The Reds threw the ball through the hands out to hooker Anthony Allport outwide, who put the foot down and sprinted to the line. The cover defence came across and Allport offloaded to big Dave Anable who rumbled over the line untouched.
Goulburn Dirty Reds 57 (Webber 3, Butler 3, Kilby, Allport, Anable tries, Webber 5, Allport con) defeated Tuggeranong 0.

Sadly for second grade, it was a different story in their grand final rematch against Royals.
Second grade took the field one man short and were never in the game, conceding 11 tries in a 69-5 hammering.
Andrew Tivey was a standout on the wing with some strong runs while scrum-half Joel McPherson showed some fine vision to spin the ball out wide under pressure.
The Reds’ only try came after they managed to string some phase play together and pressure the Royals line. Lock Dougie Webster managed to burrow himself over the line from close range to get the Reds on the board.
Royals 69 def Goulburn 5 (Doug Webster try). 5月26日 U18s & U16s figure in rep honoursSaturday, 24 May 2008
Goulburn U18s stand out Over 50 ACT schoolboys played in the annual selection trials at Jamison Oval yesterday, under a new format. Traditionally the selection trials Involved a match between Associated Southern Colleges and Combined Secondary Colleges but this year the ASC team was split in two. The new format provided selection headaches for ACT coach Paul Mead who had to sift through the abundance of talent to finalise his squad said the new selection process gave more players a chance to shine and state their claims for a place on the ACT representative team. The nationals will be held in Canberra in the first week of the upcoming school Holidays, from July8-11 at Viking Park Tuggeranong. Goulburn’ was strongly represented in both the Associated Southern colleges’ side (ASC) and Combined Southern colleges (CSC). In the CSC side, Goulburn supplied 6 players for the side that had students from as far away as Albury, Pambula and Vincentia. The 6 players were John Cottrell, Sam White, Craig Gordon, Jacob Karra, Corey Withers and Giles Cunningham. For the ASC side Trinity had 5 players invited to play in the side Josh Charley, Michael Campton Smith, Josh Hewitt, Reece Cranston and Jack Brimms who was attempting to make the side for the 2nd time in 2 years. All players tried their hardest and gave a great account of themselves with Michael Campton Smith setting himself up as the possible bolter to make the side. Unfortunately Michael was not fortunate enough to make the squad but Giles Cunningham and Jack Brimms Both made the ACT open School Boys side as well as the ACT under 18 squad, who will play games against Victoria, South Australia and NSW Country under 18s in Melbourne over the long weekend in June. Goulburn's best U16s shine in trial On Sunday the 18th 17 young under 16 players from Goulburn traveled to Braidwood to trial for the Far South Coast, Monaro under 16 representative trials. The trials drew players from as far a field as Pambula, Cooma and Vincentia. The squad will travel to Melbourne and play 2 Victorian side a side from south Australia, The ACT under 16s team and a team from the Southern Inland over the long weekend in June. This will be the first time that a team from the Far South Coast and the Monaro have gone away to play in this tournament and it is real comment on how strong Rugby is growing in this largely Rugby league and Australian Rules dominated area. Goulburn had some real success on the day, geting 11 players out of the 22 man squad selected they are Corey Whithers, Tom White, Mark Kennedy and Hugo Cunningham from the Tablelands team, while Trinity had Toby Wilson, Dom McCarthy, Matt Bird, Tom Richie, Mitch McGeechan, Brendan McKavanagh and Dom Chalker. Tim O'Brien the coach was really pleased with the commitment all the boys showed on the day and feels that this side really has some depth and that we will suprise a lot of sides down at the Melbourne tournament. 5月20日 ROUND 03: Gbn v Cooma (Away)17/5/2008
Reds remain unbeaten at a massive cost
By PETER OLIVER
Goulburn Dirty Reds 17 Cooma Red Devils 15
IT was tough, torrid and tense, but the Goulburn Dirty Reds managed to keep their unbeaten streak alive against the Cooma Red Devils.
But the loss came at a cost, with fly-half Matt Klem breaking his ankle in the first half, requiring surgery to insert pins and a plate.
The win wasn’t sealed for the visitors until the final minutes, when the Reds’ scrum barged their way over the line and a scrambling Chris Kilby dived on the ball to overtake Cooma and secure the victory. Cooma got on the board first with a penalty, but the Reds hit back through Mikael Webber to get a 5-3 lead.
Martin Browne came on to replace the injured Klem, with Webber moving infield.
It was torrid stuff out there, with both sides having a crack, with the Reds throwing the ball out-wide and the play would break down. One of these mistakes led to a Cooma try, with the Red Devils scooping on the loose ball and countering, throwing it wide and going through some flimsy defence to score.
Captain Anthony Allport urged his team to dig deep, but it wasn’t enough as Cooma crossed again.
The real battle was at the breakdown, with Cooma constantly killing the ball and slowing down the Reds’ play. The referee eventually had enough of this, yellow carding the Cooma blindside flanker on the Reds line.
From the tap young tighthead prop Dave Hook powered over the line next to the post for his first Dirty Reds try. Hook had to leave the field with a leg injury afterwards and was replaced by the experienced Ben Pearson.
Goulburn players were baffled by decisions made by the referee, including ruling Webber held up over the line after he had grounded the ball. But from there the Reds scored the final, match-winning try. Goulburn ran down the clock until the final whistle, earning a character-building victory.

Dirty Twos 14 Cooma 14
Second grade was equally as tense, coming away with a 14-all draw against Cooma.
Hard-running second rower Justin Benn scored a bustling double to keep the Reds in the game, with young half-back Joel McPherson kicking both goals. McPherson slotted one conversion from wide out into the teeth of a powerful gale.
Ben Pearson earned a 10 minute rest for brusquely brushing away a Cooma player’s arm during a maul, with the Red Devils’ player also shown the yellow card after taking exception.
Cooma eventually over-ran the Reds after injecting several first grade players into the game, with one scoring what turned out to be the levelling try.
McPherson had a chance to kick a penalty to win the game for the Reds, but the howling gale carried his tough attempt wide as the final whistle blew. 5月19日 Mixed Results for Tablelands TeamsRound 03 - May 17th 2008
Tablelands Top Guns topple Soldiers
Coming off a loss against Royals in Round 2, the Southern Garages U18’s bounced back with a 24 to 10 win against ADFA in Round 3 of the ACT junior Rugby Competition.
The previous loss had been largely due to the lack of any real pre-season competition, so the team was really still finding its feet and just starting to Gel as a unit.
The day was blustery and cold and we started the game with a strong breeze in our face, therefore the first half was played fairly tightly, with a lot of good gutsy forward work, thanks to players like Giles Cunningham, James Cabale and Reece O’Neill. This was good, as the longer the lads could hold the opposition out, the stronger they became as a unit.
Half time came and ADFA held an ominous 10 – 0 lead. But it was to be a different game in the second half, as we utilised the strong breeze to our advantage through the boot of Jacob Kara and Aaron Williams.
There is nothing like territorial advantage to inspire players to lift to another level and instil confidence into the side. This was immediately evident as the backs started to through the ball around cutting holes in ADFA’s defensive line.
We had many opportunities to score in the second half with consistent pressure being applied by our halves and loose forwards causing the opposition to spill a lot of ball within there quarter. Goulburns backline played their best football for some time, sticking to the game plan and attacking, through set moves, always testing ADFA’s defences.
We managed to cross the line four times in the second half, twice through the forwards and twice through the back line. Justifications for the amount of work both forwards and backs put in on the day.
Goulburn 24 (Giles Cunningham 2 tries; Andrew Price try; Jacob Kara try. Aaron Williams 2 conversions) def ADFA 10.
The players player award went to Giles Cunningham while Sam McNeilly picked up the Coaches Award.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the loss for the season of Ben Rabjohns. Ben was injured in a training run with the ACT U/18 side. Ben will be greatly missed this season, as he was an integral part of the team as well as team captain. Get well soon Ben.

On Saturday the Tablelands Under 16’s Rugby Union team travelled to Cooma for their third game of the season.
Still on a high from their previous win against St Edmunds, the boys were very optimistic about this game. However during the first half their hopes were dashed with injuries to two key players, Adam Brook and Hugo Cunningham. This left the team fielding only 14 players for the remainder the game.
During the second half there were glimpses of brilliance with the perseverance of Tom White and Bradley Redman almost resulting in a try each.
The continued defence and determination of Henry Reeves and Sean Lawler didn’t go unnoticed, nor did the exceptional efforts of Walter Foreman, which saw him rewarded with the player’s player for the game.
Congratulations must be given to all the team on a game well played in atrocious conditions even though the end result wasn’t in their favour.
The team now looks forward to making amends for the loss to Cooma with the return of Mark Kennedy and Adam Stevens from injury for the next game. 5月18日 Fizzy Reds Round 1Fizzy's kick off for 2008
GOULBURN Junior Rugby is underway with teams playing the second round on Friday night. All teams are coming together well and with a few more weeks of training behind them we will see a vast improvement in the skills shown at Carr Confoy fields.
All coaches are reminded that they have been given forms to complete for match reports weekly. The completed reports can be left at the canteen on Friday nights. Please ensure that your writing is readable. The results from Round 1 (Friday May 9) were as follows:
UNDER 8s
Taralga 25 def Force5
TARALGA opened strongly with some wide running to open spaces. which resulted in two early tries. For the Force, Bydie Clark ran strongly as did Elkie O'Rourke. Taralga led three tries to nil at halftime. In the second half the Force settled better and tapped better in defence but Taralga were far too strong. Riley Weekes scored late for the Force.
Reds 40 def Brumbies 25
BALMY conditions at Carr Confoy greeted both teams. This seemed to encourage a free running game played in good spirits. This was the first game with scrums and everyone adapted well. Best players for Reds were Lucas Ross and Angus Groer and Brumbies Sam Watson and Jack Mifsud. Try scorers: REDS: Liam Greenwood 2, Oscar Cole 2, Chloe Young 2, Ryan Dodson 1, Conner Ferguson I. BRUMBIES: Jack Mifsud 2, May Flack 2, Mike Cooke 1.
UNDER 10s
Brumbies 50 def Reds 10
POWERFUL attack from Will Croker and Steve Anable caused the Reds some early headaches. This attack combined with busting defence from Jack Bell and Jim Ranken had the Reds on the back foot all night. Cover defence by Lachlan Phelps and Jack Elders was a highlight for the Brumbies while John Vassallo and Jackson Huntley's skills are developing well. Sam Coggan was tine of the Reds’ best, working well in both attack and ddefence, while Charlie Newton used his strength to bust the Brumbies' line on a number of occasions. Best players for Brumbies were Jack Bell, William Croker, Steve Anable and Jackson Huntley and for Reds Sam Coggan, Charlie Newton, Jack Dival and Harry Dival. Try scorers: BRUMBIES: Steve Anable 3, William Croker 3, Jackson Huntley 2, Jim Ranken 1, John Vassallo 1. REDS: Charlie Newton 1, Sam Cogan 1.
UNDER 12
Waratahs 53 def Taralga 0
WITH a great nigh for football both teams came out for a hard game. Taralga started off with some great forward movement but once the Waratahs found their feet they shut them down. There were some big hits from both teams that would rival George Smith. Taralga were unlucky on the night and with the attitude of their younger boys they will certainly be a force at the end. Thanks to the ref and parents. Best players for Waratahs were Beau Johnson, Sam Anderson and Bailey Probert and for Taralga George Boardman, Lachlan Whatmough and Mick Garwin. Try scorers. WARATAHS: Angus Hedges, Zach Duncan, Wade Rowcliff, Kayne Davis, Matthew Sherer, Josh Chilko and Kristen Williams.
Wallabies 32 def Brumbies 5
THE game started at a frantic space with the Wallabies forwards attacking through strong runs from Nelson, Quinlan and Friend. The Brumbies counter-attacked through their slick backs of Charlie King and Jake White.
Mick White scored first for the Wallabies which was followed by a Determined scoring run from Riley Nelson. The second half was again dominated by strong forward play from both teams. The Wallabies scored four more times in the second half with a good late try to Charlie King for the Brumbies. All boys showed some good skills, which will develop with more matches.
Best for Wallabies were Oliver Friend, Douglas Unasa, Jeremy Quinlan and Nicholas Marsh, while for the Brumbies the Foley brothers (Patrick and Thomas) and Nathan Young stood out.
Scorers: WALLABIES: Riley Nelson 3, Mick White 1, Jeremy Quinlan 1, Nicholas Marsh 1 try; Riley Nelson 1 conv. BRUMBIES: Charlie King. 5月17日 ROUND 02: Goulburn v Hall/WestsSaturday, 10 May 2008
Reds stand and deliver against Bushrangers
Goulburn Dirty Reds 26 Hall Bushrangers 5
THE Goulburn Dirty Reds’ victory song rang out twice across Poidevin Oval on Saturday, with both grades making a successful start to their title defences.
The Reds ran in four tries in their 26-5 win over the Hall Bushrangers, earning their first bonus point of the season. The win was also built on the tenacious, scrambling defence that became the Reds’ trademark last season.
It took a while for the Reds to blow the rust away with the ball often going through the hands before some poor finishing saw some wasted opportunities.
The constant pressure on Hall’s defence saw them stretched once too often in the corner, with winger Jay Butler opening his account for 2008. Mikael Webber added the extras for a 7-0 lead.
The momentum swung back in Hall’s favour, applying plenty of pressure, but the Reds’ defence on their own line was stoic, constantly turning over Hall ball at crucial moments.
The match became a real arm wrestle, with Webber crossing the Hall line, only to be held up. Number 8 Ben Pearson scooped the ball up from the scrum, ran the blindside and offloaded to scrumhalf Jeff Caldwell, who strolled over untouched.
Webber made a big break down the left flank before the scrambling Hall defence managed to catch up. However they couldn’t stop fullback Dean Thompson crashing over in the corner a few rucks later.
The pressure obviously became too much for the Bushrangers, with their number 19 earning an early shower after racing in to punch one of the harder Reds’ heads on the field during a maul.
Nathan Hewett showed why he was selected in first grade after busting himself during the preseason, with a streamlined Hewett making several incising runs through the Hall backline. A break down the middle of the paddock saw Hewett put through a gap and he raced away to score under the sticks for the Reds final try.
Hall crossed for a late consolation try right on full time to take the score to 26-5.
Young flanker Ben Moore made a successful step up to first grade, earning his first best and fairest award. The Reds will be better for the hit-out, which blew the preseason cobwebs out and should see them primed for a second win next week.
*** *** ***
Dirty Twos 19 Wests 12
The Reds’ second grade side also opened their account against Wests, notching up a confidence-boosting come from behind 19-12 win.
The Dirty Twos trailed 12-0 at the half time break, with the afternoon heat taking the sting out of both sides. The half-time chat from coaches Matt O’Rourke and Jeremy Hunt reminded the players of the game plan, and the Reds came out firing in the second half.
Fielding a large, powerful, but less then mobile pack, the Reds utterly dominated the Wests scrum, constantly pushing them backwards. The front row of Matt White, Jordan Chandler and Aaron Wild were superb at the set piece, and could form a very formidable combination as the season goes on.
Chandler was outstanding in a man of the match effort, constantly hitting the ball up and bending the Hall line backwards.
Wests elected to take uncontested scrums, allowing the Reds to take the quick tap instead of being awarded a scrum, but some poor handling and decision making means the Reds were unable to build up some phase play.
Tries to the evergreen Jeff Caldwell, Jay Butler and the rampaging Chandler in the second half put the Reds in front, where they held on for a scrappy win. Both sides will board the bus and head down to the high country to take on the Cooma Red Devils next Saturday. 4月29日 Fizzy Red U10 RepsU10s impress at Canberra Stadium
The Goulburn Fizzy Reds' first representative fixture of the 2007 season took place last Friday night with the Goulburn under-10s playing the Young under-10s in a curtain raiser to the Brumbies v Western Force game at Bruce Stadium.
Captain James Finch proudly led the Goulburn team down the tunnel and out onto the Canberra Stadium to the roars of the crowd which was liberally sprinkled with very vocal Goulburn supporters. From the kick off Goulburn moved up in defence and pressured the Young side with some crunching tackles from the two locks Josh Plumb and Jack L Bell. After several attacking raids the Young side caught the Goulburn defence short and created an overlap to score out wide. Young 5 Goulburn 0. The Goulburn lads refused to take this lying down and launched a flurry of attacking plays with both Sam White and Lachlan Sykes making damaging bursts through the Young backline. This sustained attack culminated in five-eight James Finch diving over for a five-pointer. Young 5 Goulburn 5. The selectors of the Goulburn side had the Young side guessing with the inclusion of two Jack Bell's in the side, one a prop and the other a lock. The Young side must have thought that Jack Bell was all over the field as they constantly heard that name ringing in their ears. For the next five minutes the Young team then hammered the Goulburn line, wave after wave of attackers were mowed down by the front row combination Paddy Foley, Paul Zucchetto and Jack T Bell. A knock on by Goulburn led to quick turnover ball and against the run of play, a break by the Young inside centre resulted in a second try. Young 10 Goulburn 5. Goulburn half back Elijah Fernance and winger Mathew Cudaj were making some great sniping runs ensuring that the Goulburn forward pack kept rolling forward. From a Mathew Cudaj darting run James Finch accepted the ball and using fend, which would please most of the Brumbies' backs, pushed off several defenders to score in the corner. Young 10 Goulburn 10. The injection of Daniel Karooz into the game saw some of the best tackling of the entire match. Daniel proved to be a tackling machine and continually cut down the Young attackers. Josh Beard must have felt that Daniel's example was the way to go as he then pulled off several hits of his own to have the Young players avoiding both these punishing tacklers whenever possible. Goulburn's luck then turned sour as they were then desperately unlucky to have a try awarded against them from a defensive lineout. Goulburn's happy hooker Paul Zucchetto fired the ball into to the lock Jack L Bell who took a great two handed grab and then passed the ball off the top to half back Elijah Fernance. One of the Young forwards, who was very obviously lurking offside, came though the lineout and intercepted the ball to score an extremely dubious try. Young 15 Goulburn 10. This unfortunate try seemed to inspire the Goulburn side and as the halftime siren loomed a great tackle from Lachlan Sykes and good pilfering from Jack L Bell led to Paddy Foley making a burst up the sideline. Quick ball was then recycled through half back Elijah Fernance to James Finch who bustled his way over for a hat trick of tries. Young 15 Goulburn 15 at halftime. After a quick halftime talk from coach, John Bell, the Goulburn boys came firing with tons of pressure being placed on the Young defence unit. Strong runs from Sam White and Daniel Karooz put Goulburn in position to score but a dropped ball allowed the Young winger to tip-toe along the sideline and dive over in the corner. Young 20 Goulburn 15. Play then flowed from end to end with neither team being able to gain an advantage. Lachlan Sykes was hassling the Young backs into error with his "in your face" defence and both Josh Plumb and Josh Beard made ground with solid runs to put Goulburn in good field position. Elijah Fernance was desperately unlucky not to have scored when pulled down a metre short of the try line. Another turnover allowed the Young five-eighth to bolt downfield with the entire Goulburn team in hot pursuit, fullback Sam White nailed him in a great tackle but the tryline was too close and Young had scored again. Young 25 Goulburn 15. With time running out, the Goulburn team threw caution to the wind and tossed the ball around seeking a hole in the Young defence. The forwards drove the play upfield with Paul Zucchetto bustling the Young players out the way. Support arrived in the form of both the Jack Bell's who secured the ball and allowed Elijah Fernance to cleverly work the blindside and pick up winger Mathew Cudaj on the burst. Mathew Cudaj, showing great finishing skills, sprinted downfield out pacing the defence to dive over for a well worked team try. Young 25 Goulburn 20. Goulburn rushed to receive the kick off but time had run out with the final score favouring Young by 25 to 20. There were many positives to come out of the match with all players performing above the coaches expectations. After only two training runs the boys can be justifiably proud of their efforts on the day. Jack L Bell at the front of the Goulburn lineout never missed a throw from his ever reliable hooker Paul Zucchetto all day and the variety of utilising Paddy Foley as the second lineout jumper and Josh Plumb as the third lineout jumper ensured good quality ball for the speedy Goulburn backs. The tight five of Jack T Bell, Paul Zucchetto, Paddy Foley, Jack L Bell and Josh Plumb scrummaged well all day and will learn plenty from the experience. The attacking efforts in the backs of James Finch, Lachlan Sykes, Mathew Cudaj, Elijah Fernance and Sam White combined with the hard hitting defence of Daniel Karooz and Josh Beard were a joy to behold. All in all, although not the result that the boys would have liked, but they all played above themselves and created a great start to the season for the Fizzy Reds. The full team list was: Jack T Bell; Paul Zucchetto; Patrick Foley; Jack L Bell; Josh Plumb; Josh Beard; Lachlan Sykes; Daniel Karooz; Elizah Fernance; James Finch; Mathew Cudaj; Sam White. Folksy Red Column 01After a year in the Wilderness, he's back!!! By THE FOLKSY RED The Goulburn Dirty Reds got off to the best start they could hope for in 2007, easily disposing of the Yass Rams in Yass. The result was good one for the first grade lads but the win for the second graders was outstanding. The Reds have struggled for numbers at training all season until last Thursday when several players made their training debut for 2007. That hit out proved to be the key as they were to fit and far too organised for the Yass lads. Jason 'Cosmo' Kramer had one of the best individual games I have seen. He played with ample aggression in both attack and defence. It was the kind of performance that will have most first graders on notice. If the Reds are to win a first grade comp they will need second grade to be putting up performances like they did on Saturday. Pressure for spots is a great sign of depth, which the club has been chasing for some time. Another impressive performer on the weekend was 'Mr Yabbie of the Year' Charlie Brewer. 'Bruiser' made his debut in the front row on Saturday and the 2006 'Animal of the Year' didn't let any one down. 'Poi Poi Moi Moi' is a strongly built individual and while he isn't built like a traditional front rower he brings intelligence and cunning. He is filling a huge hole for the Reds and his hoping his form holds. Some impressive debuts for the Reds on the weekend. 'Big Red' Jono Hart played his first game for the two Dirties on Saturday. Speaking of debuts 'the little plumber boy' Dean Thompson made his contact sport debut on the wing in first grade, much to the disappointment of his mother Vivienne. Viv (I hope it's ok for me to call you that) had to have thought she had protected her little boy from it, but 'LPB' defied the odds to debut at age 33. Much to the delight of 'Big Phil' the boy goes good. 'LPB' looked dangerous in attack and solid as a rock in defence. He also received a best and fairest point for his efforts. Congratulations big dog. Here's hoping that a certain business partner who signed a legally binding contract might locate the top left hand side of his chest some time soon and honour his word. I won't hold my breath. Dale Backhouse had a big debut for the Dirties as well on Saturday. He was solid in second grade and then came on at fullback in first grade to score a try. He then also made his first appearance on a bus trip for the Reds. Rumours are floating about regarding his performance on the bus but it sounds like 'Cowboy' Newby and 'Yeo Dog' Yeo took care of you well. To his parents I offer a formal apology but I have the numbers of some good lawyers if you require them. On to the serious stuff now and the performance of the day. There were some notable performances. It came down to two plays. The runner up is unlucky to miss out but I'm thinking it could be a new award for the club. I will go away and look for some sponsors for our new 'Harold Holt Award of excellence'. Chris 'Shadow' Kilby is the first nomination of the year. Shadow was asked if he would like another refreshing beverage at the Soldiers Club. He responded with a 'yes, but I just have to go to the bathroom first'. The shadow wasn't to be seen again. We are appealing to the club to lock down one entry to the bathrooms. The shadow has done the old two-door trick. In one way. Out the other and gooone. Disappointing form 'Shadow'. Sponsors.... Call me. I don't think this will be the last incident of its kind in 2007. The winner of the first play of the day is the entertainment machine Boyd 'Fred Astaire' Newby. Consider the floor at the Soldiers club dominated. He smoked it up with many a willing dance partner. The ladies couldn't get enough dance time with the big man as one after another queued for a chance to 'trip the light fantastic' with the light footed second rower. It was a golden performance. Not so golden was the performance of his off-sider Anthony 'Yo-Yo' Yeo. He couldn't find a tree in a forest. In a room full of ladies looking for a dance partner no one wanted a bar of him. He danced solo so poorly that people cheered when he eventually left the establishment. He was an embarrassment to the club, his family and himself. I expect a formal written apology before he is allowed to play for the club again. It is time the Willie Mason clone started to look at himself. Well that is all for this week folks. Souths are up 10-6 and I need to cheer them home. This weekend will see the Reds either host Cooma or travel to Cooma ground availability pending. Poidevin is struggling a little and the boys will have to move to Carr-Confoy if we can find some posts. Till next time. Go the Rabbits! I mean Reds. Round 01 Report - Yass (Away)
Reds bury Rams By PETER OLIVER FIRST GRADE: Goulburn Dirty Reds 50 The Goulburn Dirty Reds sent an ominous warning to the Monaro competition on Saturday, thumping the Yass Rams 50-5. Fullback Rob Sheekey scored a hat-trick in the seven tries to one win over Goulburn's rival of 130 years, in a game where the Reds never really hit top gear. It was a case of something old and something new for the Reds. Pete de Beer made a long awaited return to the first grade side, after missing last year with an injury, while there were a few new faces in the mix. Last year's second grade players' player Ben Green made the step up to the first grade squad, while Dean Thompson made his run on debut. The Reds got off to a solid start, with Sheekey testing the Rams' defence out wide with some blazing runs, and it didn't take the Reds long to open their account. The Reds' forward pack mauled the ball up from a lineout, grinding away at the Rams' defence before spinning the ball out wide to Sheekey, who shimmied in and away to score next to the posts after 12 minutes. Although the Reds were hammered by the whistle, they still managed to turn over plenty of Yass ball at the breakdown, and defended grimly on their line. The whistle blew once too often for Webber, who earned an early halftime break after venting his frustration at referee Glenn Piazza. The Reds switched to a game of pick and drive, mixed up with some superb play through the backline, making easy yards up field. When veteran Martin Browne smashed his way over for a try, the game looked in the bag, with number eight Anthony Yeo adding to the Rams' misery with a barge-over five-pointer. The shellacking wasn't over, with Webber adding a try to his name and Sheekey notching up his third. Debutante, Dale Backhouse came on as a replacement and scored his maiden Reds try. The Reds backrow continued their great form of last year, and with the experience of de Beer, will again be a factor this season. New prop Charlie Brewer had a massive game up front, with his high work-rate around the paddock a testament to his background on the flank. One disappointment for the Reds will be the late, and very soft try, scored by the Rams' Brett Waters from a Yass kick off. The 3-2-1 went to the outstanding flanker Chris Kilby, who was all over the park for the full 80 minutes, Brewer and Thompson. Hooker Anthony Allport again played his typical bustling game, earning the players' player accolade. SECOND GRADE: Goulburn Dirty Reds 32 In second grade the Reds also recorded a victory, knocking over the Hoggets 32-0. Flanker Jason Kremer had a memorable Saturday, scoring two barnstorming tries from halfway and picking up the players' player award. Outside centre Pat Little also picked up two tries, including a sensational near length of the field intercept after the Reds had been camped on their line. The 3-2-1 went to Kremer, Moore and winger Jono Hart. Round 01 Preview - Yass (Away)Expectations high as Reds chase the title
By RICKY TOZER (Goulburn Post Friday 20th April, 2007) The Goulburn Dirty Reds will be out to erase some of the pain caused from their grand final loss when they take on Yass in the opening round tomorrow. The Reds took out the minor premiership in 2006, but couldn't handle the power of Harden in the grand final. The Reds have basically the same side as last year and new coach Matthew O'Rourke is hoping they can go one better in 2007. "All of the guys are looking forward to starting and I think there is an expectation of going one step further than last year," O'Rourke said. "The likes of Matt Klem, Dave Anable and Jeff Caldwell give us plenty of experience and then the younger players like Anthony Allport, Mick Webber and Rob Sheekey are all used to the competition." The Reds will be without former captain/coach Ben Pearson for some of the season for personal reasons, however he will still play an important role with the club. "Unfortunately Ben will be missing for a bit of the year. I am not sure what role he will play in the season, but he will be involved. But to lose a player like him is a big blow," O'Rourke said. "Anthony Allport will take over the captain's role. He is a younger player and has been around for three or four years and also had a year overseas," he said. "He is a very competitive player and has some very good skills." The Reds take on Yass in the opening round and despite Yass' ordinary performance in 2007 O'Rourke is expecting a rugged battle. "I have played against Yass myself and you never have an easy match against them," O'Rourke said. "If they do get back some of the players they lost they will be a formidable outfit. "They are never an easy team and are always very competitive, so I am not expecting an easy start to the year." After pre-season hit outs in the Crookwell 10s and against Taralga and Bowral O'Rourke is hoping his troops can switch on for the opening round and reproduce some of the efforts that saw them grab the minor premiership. "Coming out of a year where we were runners up I will be looking for the guys start well. They know what they have to do and what the end result can be," he said. "We are coming off a few pre-season games, so the guys will have to be ready for the season." The Reds and Yass do battle tomorrow at Yass tomorrow, with first grade kicking off at 3pm. 1月23日 Fizzy Reds February NewsletterWelcome to 2007.
The committees of both the Fizzy Reds and Tablelands Reds would like to assure everybody that we will be endeavoring to give those younger residents of Goulburn who would like to participate in the game made in heaven (rugby union) every opportunity to do so.
Again this year we will be running to full compliment of Fizzy Reds starting with the under 6s and 8s which is designed around two-handed touch with no tackling allowed. Those children turning 9 this year will be able to play in the under 10s. This is where we start the contact with tackling becoming a major part of the game. Those children turning 11 will move up to the under 12s and will playing under full junior rules.
Again this year the Fizzy Reds will be including insurance socks, shorts and a free pass to all the Brumbies home game in the registration fee of $50 GST included.
We will be running a 14 week season and anticipate the starting date to be the 30th March commencing at 5.30pm at a venue as yet to be confirmed. The first training night will be held on the 16th of March again commencing at 5.30 at a venue as yet to be confirmed.
We are going to run a junior rugby program again this year, which will include under 13, 14, 15, 16, and opens if we get the numbers. These teams will compete in the Canberra competition which is played on a Saturday in both Goulburn and Canberra. These teams were both quiet successful last year and if we can get the same support and participation as last year then we will have another good year.
The first registration day will be held at Sportspower on Saturday, February 3rd beginning at 11 o'clock and going through to 1.30pm. The reason we are holding the registration day so early is so that all those children that register will get the free pass for the Brumbies game and as the first home game for the Brumbies is on the 10th we do not have any other option other than to hold it on the 3rd.
Important dates to remember:
03/02/2007: Registration day at Sportspower, stating at 11am and finishing at 1.30pm.
16/03/2007: First training night for Fizzy Reds.
30/03/2007: First competition game for Fizzy Reds beginning at 5.30pm at a venue yet to be confirmed.
Again, I would urge all parents that want to be involved to put their hands up and get involved as we cannot run this competition without the valued input of parents and friends.

President (Fizzy Reds) 1月9日 Yearbook and TRUE RED: Second Edition now availableThe 2006 Club Yearbook is now available from the club for free, but only a limited number are available so act quickly. The Yearbook features a report from each of the Intra Club Presidents (Dirty Reds, Fermented Reds, Fizzy Reds and Tablelands Reds) and from the first grade coach. It also includes full season stats, every match preview and report as it appeared in the Goulburn Post and the complete list of winners from the 2006 Presentation Awards.
Fifty copies were printed to be distributed for free which should be enough for all regular players and committee members and possibly even for the major sponsors. The Club may print some more, but even if you miss out, the file (in PDF format) is available in the Resource Library section of our web page so you can download it and read it or print it out for yourself. The Second Edition of the TRUE RED book is also just back from the printers and is now available. It's essentially the same as the first edition with some extra information, mostly provided by Gary Brims and Rick Buckley, included (particularly covering the 70s and 80s) and some grammatical and factual errors corrected. There are still some gaps in information we'd like to uncover and include in the book but hopefully that can all be included in the fuller version of the club's history envisaged to be completed over the next few years. Copies of the Video of TRUE RED are also available - featuring a 45 minute video montage of pictures and team photos from the last 50 years as well as a second disk containing the pictures used for the video. Again, the availability of pictures dictated what was included but most decades are represented very well. While the copying of DVDs is fairly common place these days, we would hope that players, former players and supporters will appreciate that the sales are a helpful fund-raiser for the club and decide to buy the DVD rather than just copy it. All money from sales goes to the club. Costs of the production of the book by Hypercet Printing have already been paid while the costs of the video production and materials have been donated so all money raised by sales goes straight to the club and no-one but the club is making money from their sales. 12月28日 Casual Touch FootySurely it's too early to train!!! Nope, never too early, but you can at least ease into it gently.
Casual Touch Footy will be starting at Rugby Park at 6.30pm each Thursday night starting January 4th until full-on fair dinkum training begins on Tuesday January 30th. So take the chance to get some condition on board while it's just for fun before Pearso and Chook get the whips out in late January.
Trial matches and pre-season games have yet to be confirmed but stay tuned here for any updates. 12月16日 Big Week for KlemmyThe first week of December has been a big one for Matt Klem - and a busy one. On December 1st, Klemmy was re-elected president of the Goulburn Dirty Reds then on December 3rd, he and Trudi welcomed Toby Matthew into the world. On behalf of the whole club, we wish congratulations to Matt and Trudi for the arrival of Toby who we can only guess will be a third generation Dirty Red in something like 2025.
If you would like to wish them well or pass on your congratulations, feel free to Add a Comment. Dirty Reds Committee 2007Following on from the hugely succesful Club Reunion off the field, and grand final appearance on the field, there was renewed interest in committee positions at this year's AGM. The full list of those elected is:
On the paddock Ben Pearson will also be backing up in 2007 as first grade coach. Pearson got the firsts all the way to the main game last year despite having to coach both grades and only taking over the reigns after five rounds. This year he has the advantage of being able to plan and prepare for the season in advance. He also has the advantage of having a second grade coach to support him, a role that will be filled by Matt "so much for retirement" O'Rourke who will bring his own brand of torture to training sessions. Ben will again have Gary Stephens as his manager while Liz McLoughlin will manage the second grade side - only the second woman to act as a team manager for the club with Jane Collings filling that role in the early 90s. Reilly Martin Fizzy Reds season to be extendedThe length of the Fizzy Reds' Junior Rugby season will be extended by a further 4 weeks in 2007, it was decided at the Fizzy Reds' monthly meeting on Friday 10th November. The season will now commence three weeks before the Easter holidays and will include two weeks of training and one actual game before the school holidays. The remainder of the four weeks will be added to the end of the season, allowing the Fizzy's to take advantage of any late gala days that may be attended.
It was also decided to try and align the Fizzy's Calendar with the senior club with a calendar sent to all parents identifying all Dirty Reds home games to encourage more families to go and watch the club home games. Registration day for the 2007 season will be held at Sportspower on a Saturday morning yet to be decided. Separate stations will be set up for each age group and the committee wished to thank Rohan who has offered us free advertising for the day. In other club news, the committee decided that a minimum of three gala days should be attended this year. These should ideally be held at the beginning, middle and end of the season. 2007 is Goulburn's turn to host Wagga Wagga and Southern Inland sides and it is envisaged that this would coinicide with the middle season gala day, pending the availability of grounds. ACT Junior Rugby will be contacted to see if the Fizzy's need to pay a nominal affiliation fee to allow us to send players to their Under 12 trials next year. Reviewing last year's presentation day, including comments received from parents and related parties, it was decided not to alter the format dramatically but that more activities may be offered in 2007. The committee also advised that, for the 2007 season, it was hoped the publicity officer would provide information including match reports to not only the Goulburn Post but also to 2GN and this website to boost the code's exposure. The planned stock take will still be taking place at Poidevin Oval on Saturday 18th November beginning at 10am for a stock take of all rugby equipment. If anyone has any Fizzy Reds equipment that should have been returned, please ensure it is returned to the Oval on or before the stocktake day so it can be included. While speaking on Poidevin Oval, Fred Hucker is to be approached to explore the possibilities of having the ground line marked by Correctional Centre inmates. The meeting finished at 8.45pm and the next meeting is scheduled for Friday 1st December at 6.30pm (with agenda items to be sent to Jack Cunningham - 0408 418525. Fizzy Reds Committee 2007The Fizzy Red Goulburn Junior Rugby Club held its AGM on Friday 20th October with a large number of people present. One of the primary purposes of the meeting was to elect a new committee for the coming season and that committee (with some spots yet to be filled) is as follows:
The positions marked TBA are still to be filled and president Jack Cunningham indicated that he would welcome any expressions of interest for these roles. In General Business, Brumbies development officers indicated that the Fizzy Reds would again receive an Under 10 Curtain Raiser to a Brumbies game in 2007. In a similar vain, Craig Leseberg will seek through the Brumbies representative paths for Goulburn juniors. From other points raised, John Bell will investigate possible dates for gala days and will discuss with Ross Copland which games will be representative games and which will be open to Fizzy Red players. Matt Klem, as Canteen Co-ordinator, indicated that at least one month's notice would be needed in advance of Gala Days. He will also be conducting an official stocktake of all Fizzy Red resources, including jumpers, cones and tackle equipment on Saturday 18th November at 10.30am at Poidevin Oval. The Fizzy Reds will meet on the first Friday of each month for their monthly meetings, with the exception of of November when they will meet on the 10th November. |
